Sexy Smile March 12, 2007

I wish I could remember the blog where I first read about Dr. Pia Lieb’s SexySmile. I did a random search of some archives, but couldn’t find where I had first heard it announced. At the time, no one had tried the product, it was just on the radar. I had heard of similar items and the new marketing of tooth whitening as a part of one’s daily hygiene, so out of intrigue I went ahead and ordered the gloss.

The gloss is nice. A little bit on the tacky side, and without any of the peppermint oil I’ve come to love in my C.G. Bigelow glosses, but the sheen is very pretty and the staying power–for a gloss–is not bad at all. The color is very sheer. If I had realized that, I might have tried a bolder hue than Cafe Latte, but then again, it is a nice shade for my skin tone.

The whitener is very handy and easy to use. The first time I used the whitener, I accidentally retrieved double the amount needed, but ever since it has been very easy to apply. The whitener is similar to the Crest Night Effects Whitening System, but the whitening fluid is less clumpy, easier to apply, and not as distasteful as the Night Effects. Unfortunately the tip of the applicator is getting a little bushy from the tube, but I suppose that comes with use.

Overall, the product might be a little gimmicky, but useful for someone who is trying to keep on top of newly whitened teeth by applying after a coffee, dark tea or soda.

Boots Beauty March 11, 2007

Target (Which is quickly becoming my favorite store!) has a new line of beauty products, Boots. I had read about Boots opening at Target at The Budget Fashionista blog site. The blog stated that the products were department store quality, along the lines of Clinique. When my local Target opened up the Boots aisle, this is what I brought home: No. 7 Radiant Glow Concealer, No.7 High Lights, No.7 Nail Polish in Siren and the 5-Day Detox kit.

Of the above, my favorite product so far is the Radiant Glow concealer. This is one of those tubes that requires clicking out the concealer into a brush at the other end. I’ve liked the ease of applying a product with this type of function before, so it is not surprising that I would find it appealing. The concealer did appear to brighten the dark inner corners of my eye. Brighten is the appropriate word; it didn’t look like I had applied a layer of color around my eyes. The skin had a lighter appearance around the eyes. At the end of the day, the luminescence was gone, so I can’t rave about the staying power. For a quick awake look in the morning, it does the job.

I have used Benefit’s High Beam for some time. It does a great trick highlighting the face for a special evening out. When I saw Illuminating Lotion at half Benefit’s price for more than 2 to 3x the amount, I had to pick it up. I used it underneath foundation to provide an all-over glow. It does exactly as promised. At such a great price, it is a must have. There are so many ways to play with this product–under foundation, mixed in with a liquid foundation for a dewy look, or as a spot highlighter on nights when I am wearing more make up than normal. I also like the texture quite a bit. It is easily spreadable, with the consistency of a facial lotion. Sometimes the Benefit High Beam has too much of a tackiness, making the pigment too thick. Blending it out can be a bit of a chore. That won’t be a problem with this product; although, it may be more difficult to use this as a spot highlighter for the same reason. I will have to play around with it to see.

When I opened my J.Crew catalog this month, I noticed the models’ toes. They were wearing a bright, contemporary red nail polish. I don’t usually find myself attracted to red nail polish. It makes me feel like I’m trying to go retro or take on a vixen look a la Dita Von Teese, which is only acceptable if I’m taking the night to go swing dancing to a big band. Since I rarely find myself doing the east coast swing, this is not my look. But the red I’m talking about has a sort of coral and pink quality–nothing fuscia, and very light, but enough that it makes it new. When I spotted Siren, a red nail from No.7, I thought I may have found my J.Crew toes–and I did! This is the perfect daytime red for my fair skin. I was happy to show off my toes in my sandals today.

I’m a sucker for buying the 5-day Detox kit. I picked it up because it was advertised as an Allure 2006 Most Valuable Product and because I had read about it in many of the blogs announcing the arrival of Boots. But really, at $20 for 5 days . . . I’m wishing I had spent the money on the Facial Pamper Kit or the Weekend Pamper Kit for the opportunity to check out more of the Boots line. I am intrigued by the amount of detox/vitamin products Boots offers. There’s a skin brightening kit, a detox vitamin kit for a month, and green tea and ginger supplements. But when I opened up the 5-day Detox to find it’s really just five bottles of liquid vitamins/herbs to add to my daily water, I felt a little bit cheated. I already take my daily vitamins. I have the Drop ‘n Drink vitamins from Trader Joe’s. What’s the difference? I will drink my strawberry-flavored water faithfully for five days. If anything radical happens, I’ll blog about it, but I wouldn’t hold my breath. From other reviews I’ve read since, it sounds like the liquid is some sort of diuretic. Great.

Next time I’m at Target, I will hit the Boots aisle again. No.7 is supposed to have London’s #1 selling lip liner, and I do look forward to trying some products from the Botanics line.

If you are looking to add decent quality, yet affordable, cashmere pieces to your wardrobe, monitor J.Crew’s sales. The sale shop currently offers the boyfriend sweater, a v-neck, loose fit sweater at $70 and cashmere gloves at 1/3 the original price. Both are shown below in Waterfall. The coupon code SNTM will give you 10% off your order. It worked for me today, but I don’t know when it expires.

Target en Vogue March 2, 2007

As I mentioned a week or so ago, I’ve been reading about Target all over the Fashion blogs. From Proenza Schouler’s line to Rafe’s handbags, the buzz was all over the Internet. Then I opened up the March 2007 issue of Vogue. Target made a fashionable appearance several times in the article “100 Under $100.” Here are the featured Target selections:

  • Proenza Schouler striped, long-sleeve tissue tee
  • Proenza Schouler pants in what looks to be a grey skinny jean, but I’m not sure. I couldn’t find a matching item on the Target.com site.
  • Proenza Schouler bag in that already ubiquitous palm print in pinks. I’m sick of it already, and I haven’t even seen anyone wearing it yet. On a side note, there’s a matching bikini in this print.
  • Jade Victoria Hagan vase.
  • Proenza Schouler coat. It’s a really cute, 3/4 sleeve, double-breasted pinkish and beige-ish striped coat. I didn’t see it offered on Target.com, and I sure didn’t notice it in my local Target.
  • Mossimo espadrilles, wedges in white with ties.
  • Isaac Mizrahi polo, large baby pink and white stripes with tons of sequins. In other words, everything bad about the 80s. Just kidding . . . I’m sure there are some girls younger than I who will look great in this top.

I always like to see the thrifty buys alongside the glamorous. Some other non-Target specific notables include CoverGirl TruShine lipstick in Raspberry and a beautiful coral-pink color, romantic blouse from Forever 21. Forever 21 doesn’t typically grab my eye, but this trendy piece looks modest enough to wear to work and the neckline has some really pretty elements.

Bedtime Beauty Buys That Won’t Break the Bank March 1, 2007

My skin turned scaly after a week of nightly bubble baths sucked out all moisture. Tonight I soaked in Aveeno’s Stress Relief Foaming Bath with natural colloidal oatmeal, lavender, chamomile, and ylang-ylang. The scent is pleasing, not overpowering. The bubbles were great, lasting all the way through the bath–something my other bubble bath products can never deliver. Best of all, my skin feels soft and moisturized. Moisturized enough that I won’t need to apply a layer of lotion, as I usually do, before applying L’Oreal Sublime Glow in Medium and Jergens’ natural glow FACE.

I tried to give myself a bikini wax using Veet’s Comfort Waxing Kit. The first strip revealed perfection, but I couldn’t replicate my beginner’s luck on any of the remaining pulls. I ended up with a lot of warm wax to shower off and further resolve to stick to shaving.

I typically apply my Burt’s Bees Royal Jelly Eye Cream. I have yet to find an eye cream I really like, so I continue to work my way through this jar, even though the product is quite gooey and often gets in my eyes. I also put on my Burt’s Bees Beeswax Lip Balm–a must before bedtime. My second favorite nighttime chapstick is Blistex’s Daily Conditioning Treatment. Although its 20 SPF makes it a standard beach day must-have, as well.  If I have the time, I finish off my nightly beauty routine by pushing back my cuticles, filing my nails, and adding a quick coat of SolarOil.

When I need a little help relaxing, I’ll use my Origins Sensory Therapy Peace of Mind on my wrists, temples, and back of my neck. This combined with my 15-minute free download of Pzizz Sleep soundtrack puts me right to bed. Or, if I’m not quite ready to hit the sack, I enjoy Trader Joe’s Bedtime tea.

Drugstore.com is advertising a season sale, including a free gift with any Burt’s Bees purchase of $25 or more and 15% off all Aveeno products. Their sale prices were just about the same as my neighborhood Target’s prices, but if they throw in a free gift, you’ve got yourself a deal.
